About Me

My name is Mady, I am 21 years old and I am living in Chicago! I was raised in Overland Park, Kansas--where I lived for 14 years before I moved to Chicago. I am currently studying to become a Public Relations Professional at DePaul University. I am hoping to graduate in the Spring of 2015 with a double major in Communication & Media Studies and Public Relation & Advertising and also a minor in Marketing.

When I was 17 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes after being involved in a car accident (for more information read My Diagnosis Story). With school work, actually working, depending on public transportation, and now living without my parents...my diabetes does NOT always come first. My new life has inspired me to reach out to college kids with T1 and create a blog that serves as a community board to share our experiences--common or not--and also to share suggestions and stories.

I am not on a pump, so I rely on injections. Since my diagnosis, I have been on Humalog as my fast-acting insulin and Lantus as my long-lasting insulin. I have many mixed feelings when it comes to getting a pump. I think my main issue is that my standards are WAY too high, because whenever a new pump is presented to me I can always find something wrong that makes it not good enough. I'm sure I will keep being defiant until there is a way to surgically insert a chip in my pancreas and make everything all better. Until then, you can follow me on my journey to this magical procedure off in the distant or not so distant future.

  1. I can relate to the mixed feelings about the pump. I was diagosed at age 20 while at college - but that was 34 years ago. Still no pump. Lantus and Humalog here too. Things have changed a lot (for the better) in 34 years.
